I’ve always been fascinated by abandoned spaces. Some are creepy and weird, and some are sad and melancholy. For me, ghost towns fall into the latter category. Years ago, my wife D and I went on a journey through Utah and Arizona looking for some of these remains. D took hundreds of photographs which I believe truly show the loneliness and loss these spaces represent. More recently, as I worked on this piece, these images kept appearing in my mind’s eye and inspired me to shape and ultimately finish the composition.
The photographs in this piece are from a few places. Many are photos of Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, AZ. This is one of the more accessible and well known places. Others are from the former mining town of Octave, AZ which is deep in the Sonoran Desert in Yavapai County. Still more, particularly the building shown in the thumbnail, are a mystery, the details and names lost even to us.
