In the Spring of 2020, as the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic started to sink in, many people experienced a range of emotions. Some responded with anger, some with bravado, some with fear and trepidation.
Someone in our little corner of Massachusetts decided to lift our spirits by hanging little signs along the roadsides, each with a single word, each painted in blue block letters on a yellow background. We don’t know who put them up but we found them very inspiring and got a little joy each time we found one.
These single-word messages of hope, compassion, kindness, joy, and peace showed us that there is so much we can do and be to get through this together with dignity and grace. And love, especially love.
Months later, the signs are still there, perhaps refreshed from time to time as some look new. Regardless, we noticed that some of them were disappearing so, we scoured the roads and took photographs of as many as we could find before they were gone forever. That trip inspired this piece.
You can also grab it from Spotify, Amazon, and Bandcamp (I’d appreciate the support).
